Mowing & Mulching UpdateSpring has sprung and as you may know, Willowsford has two contractors for grounds maintenance; one North of Route 50 and one South of Route 50. We have a couple of updates to provide: Grange & Grant - Mowing commenced on Monday and they are working through both villages, but had to pull off the property today due to rain. They expect to finish up the full mow cycle and mulching of any remaining street trees by the end of this week, weather pending. Greens & Grove - Street tree rings and mulch beds have been prepped, but mulching is still in process. They expect to be back on property mulching this weekend and continue next week until complete. Mowing is also expected to start tomorrow, weather permitting. All Villages - The buffer strips that are mowed every other week between homes and open space are scheduled to commence with the next mow cycle. Mowing is expected to take place every 7-10 days, weather permitting.

Enforcement of Open Space ViolationsWe know that most of our residents appreciate the Willowsford vision of a community designed to be integral with its natural setting of expansive open space. Regardless of whether the open space is managed by the HOA or Conservancy, please understand it cannot be maintained, altered, or claimed in any way by residents.
We have seen an increase in what we assume are well-intentioned efforts to maintain or alter open spaces, that include in some cases, the expansion of individual yards past a homeowner’s property line. These actions are not permitted for several reasons to include: liability, ecological damage, inconsistent appearance, etc. Therefore, the HOA and Conservancy will continue comprehensive enforcement to prevent such intrusions into open space. If encroachment is observed, any unauthorized landscaping and private property will need to be removed from the open space and any maintenance must cease. Additionally, habitat will need to be restored to its original condition at the homeowners’ expense. Enforcement ensures the sustainable management of Willowsford open space for the benefit of the community at large.

Q: What is your favorite local restaurant? A: Rubino’s Pizzeria! Before moving to West Virginia, I would visit NoVa quite often and their pepperoni pizza was always on my list.
Q: Do you have a pet? What is he/she like? A: We have two oh-so-handsome and wildly humanized black labs, Harper and Kevin. Yes, we named our dog Kevin. It works, trust me.

Willowsford Conservancy Welcomes New Farm ManagerWillowsford Conservancy is excited to announce the hiring of Andrew Dunham as the new manager of Willowsford Farm, effective April 19th.
Andrew founded Grinnell Heritage Farm in Iowa and farmed with his wife, Melissa, on family land which was settled by his great-grandparents in 1857. Andrew became interested in pursuing a career in organic agriculture while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Tanzania. His agricultural and wildlife habitat interests stemmed from his upbringing in northeast Iowa while planting thousands of native trees and shrubs and gardening alongside his parents.
At Grinnell Heritage Farm this led to a growing 25 acres of organic produce with a thriving CSA, establishing pollinator gardens, seeding cover crops, planting beetle banks, and growing hundreds of thousands of plants for transplant in the greenhouse. These practices have been highlighted during field days by Practical Farmers of Iowa, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Xerces Society, and numerous educational institutions.
The Dunhams have been recognized as leaders in agriculture, including receiving an Iowa Environmental Leader award. Andrew has a degree in Animal Ecology from Iowa State University. When not farming, Andrew enjoys spending time with his three children, reading, and exploring the natural world. Andrew and Melissa are excited to get to know the Willowsford community.
